The Hong Kong Police Force’s cybersecurity unit has introduced CyberDefender, a newly launched metaverse platform aimed at raising public awareness about the potential risks associated with Web3 and the metaverse.
In a statement released on May 27, the Cyber Security and Technology Crime Bureau (CSTCB) of the Hong Kong Police Force unveiled the metaverse platform as part of their efforts to prepare the public for the “challenges that lie ahead in the digital era,” with a particular focus on preventing technology-related crimes.
Simultaneously with the platform’s launch, an event titled “Exploring the Metaverse” took place across three virtual venues, where attendees engaged in discussions about crime prevention strategies within the metaverse.
During the event, Ip Cheuk-yu, the chief inspector of the CSTCB, underscored the significance of exercising caution within the metaverse. He urged attendees to apply the same level of vigilance they practice when using the internet, stating:
All crimes in the cyberspace could also happen in the metaverse, such as investment frauds, unauthorized access to systems, theft and sexual offenses.
